But… I just love this video so much and I can’t stop watching it. So I thought I would share it on here. A lot of people will have already seen it but it is worth a watch. This will hopefully help some people understand that for me and for a lot of my friends being a Christian doesn’t mean judging people, trying to change and convert them. Christianity is not about religion; in fact I try my hardest to not become religious. It means loving people just the way that they are and where they are. It is about having Grace and forgiveness for people and wanting to be a positive and encouraging influence in people lives.
Watch and enjoy J
Love, Grace, Forgiveness. We could all use a little bit more of it

I get the guy's message, but I don't get why he (or you) specifically states or implies he isn't religious. The only possible reason I could think of is that he believes there are negative connotations which come with the word religious, and he wants to be separated from those connotations (but feel free to correct me if there is another reason).
ReplyDeleteBut it's a cop out to do that. First of all, he is, by definition, religious. All the word means is practicing an agreed upon belief/set of beliefs in a group. He does those things, so he is religious. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever. Secondly, people giving religion a connotation, good or bad, are stupid. It's the content of a religion which is important, not the fact that it fits into a broad and relatively inane definition.
Point is, not only is it dishonest to say he isn't religious (he IS), smart people aren't going to judge a person for being religious anyway; they'll judge you (positively or negatively) for your actions and your beliefs and nothing else.
Why would you want to win the hearts and minds of people who don't understand the meaning of the word religion anyway?
Hey Ro
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment.
I do unfortunately think there are negative connotations which come with being “religious”.
I see what you are saying about the definition of what religion is and you are right but I think
There is a difference I believe and what I think this guy is getting at from being Religious and having a relationship with Jesus. For me being religious is going to church every week, reading my bible every day etc and doing those sorts of things just because that is the thing to do and the way it should be. Whereas having a relationship with Jesus is about, knowing the sacrifice Jesus made for me wanting to be closer to God and learning to be better, more loving and accepting understanding of people. It is about relationship with God .I could be religious, read my bible every day and go to church once a week but still not have any idea of Gods love.
You said they'll judge you (positively or negatively) for your actions and your beliefs and nothing else”
but that’s exactly what I was trying to say when I said “However the thing for me is that I want my friends and the people around me to see it and not just hear it”
I just may not have said it as eloquently as you budd :p
